Hi, helping Australian animals like the Platypus and the Wombat is easy. All you need to do is act wild!

What do Teachers need to know about Act Wild?

Act Wild is about getting young people in our community active in conservation. We will provide them with the opportunities and tools required to make a tangible and positive difference to the environment – both locally and globally.

Whilst primarily it is aimed at our amazing students, we would love teachers to get involved. In classrooms throughout Australia, you are able to raise the issues, help students get their hands dirty and inspire them to make a difference!

These pages are here to provide some guidance, ideas and inspiration for you, so that you can make the most of these materials in your classes and curriculum. If you have a suggestion on how to improve this page or any of our resources, please e-mail us. We'd love to hear from you.

Wild Schools

Wild Schools is your best starting point. This section features a collection of resources which will help in creating a rich and memorable class or unit of work. Use the monthly Challenge Question as a launch pad for a class enquiry and follow it up with our online web conferences. Students and educators can chat to wildlife experts in the field right from your classroom computer!

Watch videos relating to the different animals and conservation issues, or even Get Creative and have students create their own campaign video using our simple online mash-ups tools. Get Grubby allows you to access guides on building a nestbox, creating a wildlife-friendly garden and many other hands-on activities which can be done to promote the environment.

If your students are feeling inspired to take action for conservation, they might even be profiled on our Wild Activist page – click here to see what other students around Australia are doing.

Animals

The Animals pages provide a whole lot of information regarding eight key animal species. Students can easily access facts, photos, videos, location maps, threats and actions for each animal.

Our local species:
Our exotic species:
These pages can be used for research and as a springboard to discuss environmental issues, as each species has a clear link to conservation.

Events

The Events calendar is where we list local events that you and your students can get involved in, both within and outside of school hours. This is the go-to place for extending the learning outside of the classroom and finding out what is happening right here in Victoria.

Zoo Feeds

Want to know what really goes on behind-the-scenes at our zoos? Zoo Feeds is a mini-blog, updated by our very own zoo people – educators, zookeepers, conservationists – who work at one of our three properties (Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo or Werribee Open Range Zoo). We'll also feature posts by guest bloggers and from organisations such as Greening Australia.

Uploaded by the staff themselves, students can come here to post questions and hear from people working hard for conservation. Post a comment, start some dialogue and get a real answer from a real person involved in a real issue.

Teachers' Toolbox

The Teachers' Toolbox pages provide the curriculum links between Act Wild and Victoria’s Essential Learning Standards as well as illustrating how Act Wild can help support the Biodiversity module of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (ResourceSmart AuSSiVic).

You can get involved in our monthly Student Web Conferences which take place via Elluminate. These monthly conferences are based on our Challenge Questions and will allow educators and students to chat with wildlife experts in real time.
