Peafowls rule the zoo

Where do peafowl go for lunch?  Our lunch table of course!
Where do we eat lunch? Good question, it can be hard to find a free table these days!

Peafowl, Pavo cristatus are native to South Asia.  Males are called ‘Peacocks’ and are known for their beautiful iridescent blue-green or green coloured plumage which is patterned with eye spots.  Females are known as peahens and lack the long, colourful upper tail of the male.  Baby peafowl are called peachicks.  Male peachicks are not born with their adult colours and as you can see in the photo, it can difficult to tell a young male from a young female.

This free ranging peahen and her two peachicks were checking out the local lunch spots at Melbourne Zoo.  Finding nothing to their liking, they moved on to find some tasy treats in the nearby gardens.  Being omnivorous, their favourite foods are parts of plants , flower petals, seed heads, insects and other arthropods, small reptiles, and amphibians.

Peacock

The peacock is the national bird of India and symbolises qualities such as beauty, grace, pride and mysticism.

Do you know what the bird emblem of Victoria is?

Helmeted Honeyeater

And what do you think makes this colourful bird so precious?
