This is one of the first glimpses we have had of our new baby koala, peeping out of his mum’s pouch. He’s now about 6 months old, and has only started coming out of the pouch in the last 2 weeks.
Mum Prickles doesn’t look too concerned. She’s done this before and we know she’s a great mum despite her rather grumpy reputation (she’s called “Prickles” for a reason).
Prickles would rather just keep eating those delicious eucalyptus leaves, to maintain her energy and supply the baby with milk.
He will be out of the pouch completely in a few more weeks, but will keep drinking milk until he is about 12 months old. But for now it’s time to climb back in where it’s warm and secure…
If you’d like to help name our baby koala, you can enter the naming competition here or you can enter onsite if you’re coming to Healesville Sanctuary this week. Be quick- the winning entry will be chosen on October 13! (By the way, keepers now know he’s definitely a boy!) Cute much?
They are soooo cute
