We have to make sure we clean everything very carefully between catching and checking devils. Anything that can be burnt (like sacks and tongue depressors we use to look for DFTD) are collected and placed in a tub to take home to burn. We put sharp stuff (like microchip needles) into a sharps container and any rubbish (like gloves) goes into biohazard waste. We then use veterinary grade disinfectant to clean all the equipment, like calipers and scales.
Using calipers to measure devil teeth. It’s very important to disinfect theses between health checks
We wash the traps very carefully to ensure all traces of the devils are washed away inside and out. This takes a lot of time! We then spray the entire trap with disinfectant to ensure it is safe for the next devil.
Cleaning a devil trap!
We spray ourselves with disinfectant too! The disinfectant is very safe for animals and for us, but not for bacteria and viruses. We all wear coveralls over our normal clothes to ensure we can keep everything clean. It is very important to follow all of our special safety routines to keep everything safe for devils, quolls and people!
Resetting a trap in the field
Finally we can pack everything up and reset our trap with fresh meat for the next day.
